These days, water seems to be all over the news for its scarcity. We all need to do our part to conserve as much water as we can. A swimming pool can potential be a huge culprit with water loss. Not only is a pool leak a huge waste of water, it also affects the pool water chemistry and surrounding areas in a negative way and can be costly in the end.

I use a device called the Leakalyzer that enables me to quickly determine if a pool is losing water, and how much water it's losing. This super sensitive device measures water level changes to the 10,000th of an inch, and tracks these changes in real time on a digital graph. In fact, the Leakalyzer is so sensitive that water loss of less than a gallon from a 20ft. x 40ft. pool is readily indicated.

Unless the leak is above ground and noticeable, a Water Loss Detection won't pinpoint where the leak(s) is occurring but rather how much water the pool is losing per day. If a leak is detected then it would be recommended for a leak detection company to perform extensive testing to figure out the cause(s). Leak detection is hard even for the seasoned professionals. My Water Loss Detection report can help provide useful data to make it a little easier to find the leak(s).

Why don't you offer this service during the home buying process?

As most of you know, the home buying process only allows a certain amount of time during the inspection period (typically 10 days). When a Water Loss Detection report showed significant loss of water, the typical response would be to find the leak(s) and get estimates for any repairs. That is definitely the recommendation at that point. I, however, am not a Leak Detection company and cannot provide that service. At that point, another company would need to be hired to do the leak detection and, in my experience, it was hard to get someone out there in the limited time-frames during the inspection period. Buyers can request an extension in the inspection period but that has to be negotiated and the seller can reject. Depending on the real estate market at the time, any new negotiations could compromise the deal. For these reasons, I have chosen not to provide Water Loss Detection services during the home buying process.

There is a lot of value in hiring a Leak Detection company to evaluate a pool during the home buying process. A leaking pool can be a burden and cost a lot of money to maintain properly. Leak repair can be a huge expense depending on where the leak(s) are. I strongly encourage anyone to hire a Leak Detection Company when buying a new home so you know what potential problems may exist. Make sure to contact a company as soon as possible to see if they can meet your time constraints. Don't get stuck with a leaky pool.

Why get a Water Loss Detection report?
